Amit Shah Leads Talks On Darjeeling, Kurseong And Kalimpong Political Solution

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a crucial meeting on Saturday to discuss a permanent political solution for the hills covering Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong.

The meeting began at a resort in Sukna, near Siliguri, in Darjeeling district. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, BJP Lok Sabha member Raju Bista and three BJP legislators attended.

The legislators included Noman Rai from Darjeeling, Bharat Kumar Chhetri from Kalimpong and Sonam Lama from Kurseong.

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung and general secretary Roshan Giri joined the discussions.

Gorkha National Liberation Front president Man Ghisingh, son of the late GNLF founder Subash Ghisingh, attended.

The meeting primarily focuses on finding a lasting political solution for the hills.

The GJM played a significant role in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

BJP candidates backed by the GJM won all six seats across Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.

Last month, Gurung and Giri met Adhikari in Kolkata.

Transport Minister Arjun Singh attended the meeting, which lasted around 90 minutes.

The hills have witnessed prolonged political tension over the demand for a separate Gorkhaland.

Previous Left Front and Trinamool Congress governments faced sustained differences with hill-based parties over the issue.

With the BJP-led government now formed in West Bengal with GJM support, its leadership believes a ‘double engine’ government could help resolve the Gorkhaland issue.

Gurung recently expressed hope that discussions with the Centre and state government could resolve the political dispute. The matter may feature in Saturday’s talks.

The meeting could cover teacher appointments, tea gardens, transport and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
