Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated the first-ever All India Speakers’ Conference 2025 at the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
The two-day national event commemorates the 100th anniversary of Veer Vitthalbhai Patel’s election as the first Indian Speaker of a legislative body.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta led the organisation of the conference, which brought together Speakers and Deputy Speakers from State Assemblies across the country, along with Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of Legislative Councils from six states.
During the inaugural session, Amit Shah released a commemorative postage stamp honouring Vitthalbhai Patel.
He also opened a special exhibition that traces the 100-year journey of the Delhi Legislative Assembly—from its origins as the Imperial Legislative Council to its evolution into the Central Legislative Assembly and, eventually, India’s first Parliament.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta attended the ceremony as Chief Guests, underlining the collaborative spirit of the event.
Several prominent leaders and former parliamentary dignitaries participated in the conference.
Notable speakers included Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Kiren Rijiju, and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
The conference placed strong emphasis on strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing the role of legislative bodies in India’s federal structure, and reflecting on the legacy of parliamentary pioneers such as Vitthalbhai Patel.
Participants also discussed digital innovations, including AI-enabled tools, to improve transparency, efficiency, and responsiveness in lawmaking.
