Amit Shah Hails Sanskrit Revival Under Modi Government

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for creating a favourable national climate for the resurgence of Sanskrit.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 1,008 Sanskrit Sambhashan Shivirs in New Delhi, Shah highlighted the government’s comprehensive initiatives to preserve and promote India’s ancient language.

Major Schemes Underway For Manuscript Preservation

Shah announced that the government has launched a Rs 500 crore national mission Gyan Bharatam to collect, preserve, and digitise Sanskrit and Prakrit manuscripts scattered across the country.

So far, the government has documented over 52 lakh manuscripts, digitised approximately 3.5 lakh, and made 1.37 lakh accessible online via namami.gov.in.

To support this initiative, a multidisciplinary team of scholars and linguists has been formed to translate and conserve these rare texts.

Ashtadashi Scheme And Scholar Support

The Home Minister also revealed that 18 projects have been implemented under the Ashtadashi scheme, with the Central government providing financial aid for publishing, bulk purchasing, and reprinting rare Sanskrit works.

He credited Prime Minister Modi for increasing the honorarium given to distinguished Sanskrit scholars, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to the language’s revival.

Commending Sanskrit Bharati’s Grassroots Effort

Shah lauded the Sanskrit Bharati for its pioneering role in organising the 1,008 Sanskrit-speaking camps, describing the initiative as ‘remarkable and courageous’.

He pointed out that the decline of Sanskrit had begun long before colonial rule and noted that its revival would demand sustained, long-term efforts.

He also underlined the organisation’s work since 1981 in spreading Sanskrit learning and enabling millions to speak the language.

“Rather than dwelling on the past, we must look ahead and focus on revitalising Sanskrit,” he urged.

Acknowledging Scientific Value Of Sanskrit

Highlighting global academic recognition, Shah stated that many international scholars have identified Sanskrit as the most scientific language in the world.

He emphasised that India must now work to bring its rich Sanskrit heritage to the global stage.

The event witnessed the presence of several notable figures, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who joined Shah in celebrating the achievements and future vision for Sanskrit’s revitalisation.
