Amit Shah Calls For Massive Afforestation Under Green Gandhinagar Drive

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Saturday called for intensified afforestation across the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency under the ‘Gandhinagar Lok Sabha, Green Lok Sabha’ initiative. He chaired an organisational review meeting at Circuit House in Ahmedabad. He reviewed ongoing environmental efforts and outlined fresh plantation targets.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Gujarat BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma attended the meeting.

Elected representatives and party office-bearers also participated in the discussions.

Officials reviewed the seven-year campaign, which promotes environmental conservation, public participation and the expansion of green cover.

Organisers informed the meeting that the initiative has planted more than 1.5 crore trees during the past three years.

Addressing the gathering, Shah said tree plantation is a collective social responsibility rather than a political exercise. He urged every household in the constituency to plant and nurture trees. He stressed that long-term maintenance is as important as planting them.

Shah acknowledged that tree density in the constituency has increased by 11.2 per cent, but said greater efforts remain necessary to tackle climate change and rising global temperatures. He recommended that at least 33 per cent of all plantations include long-living tree species. He said these trees provide lasting benefits such as oxygen, shade and ecological stability.

The Union Minister emphasised that systematic plantation and continuous care would significantly improve the region’s long-term environmental balance. He reiterated that protecting the Earth, biodiversity, and natural resources remains a shared responsibility.

Shah also urged citizens, educational institutions, social organisations, industrial bodies, voluntary groups and political workers to identify vacant land suitable for plantation drives. He appealed to every citizen to plant at least one tree and personally ensure its survival, saying collective participation could transform Gandhinagar into a model green constituency.
