Azam Khan
The Allahabad High Court has reserved its decision after completing the bail hearing on SP leader Azam Khan’s criminal appeal in the Dungarpur Basti case. This appeal contests the seven-year sentence handed down by the Rampur Court. The court also reserved decisions on the appeals of retired CO Ale Hasan Khan, former Municipal Chairman Azhar Khan, and contractor Barkat Ali. All received the same sentence.
Justice Rajiv Mishra, presiding over a single bench, reserved the order after the debate on the bail pleas concluded. In March, the Rampur Court sentenced Azam Khan and his co-accused to seven years in prison for their involvement in the Dungarpur Basti case. The court also imposed a fine of five lakh rupees on Azam Khan. The court convicted them for breaking into a house, assaulting, vandalizing, abusing, and threatening to kill.
On February 3, 2016, several individuals, including former CO City Ale Hasan Khan, former Chairman Azhar Khan, contractor Barkat Ali, and 20 to 25 unknown policemen, forcibly entered the home of Jail Road resident Ehtesham Khan. They beat him and demolished his house with a bulldozer. Ehtesham Khan filed a case on July 25, 2019, in Rampur’s Ganj police station against the accused. He charged them with breaking into his house, assaulting, abusing, robbery, and criminal conspiracy. The police investigation later named Azam Khan as an accused.
In 2019, 12 cases related to the evacuation of Dungarpur Basti were registered in the Ganj police station area of Rampur. One of these cases was filed by Ehtesham Khan. After the hearing, the Rampur Court in March convicted Azam Khan and his co-accused. They were sentenced to seven years in prison.
Azam Khan, Ale Hasan Khan, Barkat Ali, and Azhar Khan appealed to the Allahabad High Court to cancel their sentences and grant bail. After the debate on the bail pleas, Justice Rajiv Mishra’s single bench reserved the order.
