After ‘Shivalik’, LPG Carrier ‘Nanda Devi’ Safely Passes Through Strait Of Hormuz

The Indian-flagged LPG tanker Nanda Devi has successfully exited the Strait of Hormuz after the earlier safe transit of another Indian vessel, Shivalik, amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Government sources confirmed that both ships were granted safe passage through the crucial shipping route following diplomatic engagement between India and Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, carrying a large share of global oil and gas shipments.

Government officials said the LPG carrier Shivalik is currently under Indian Navy escort and will likely reach an Indian port—likely Mumbai or Kandla—within the next two days.

The vessel has already entered open waters and is sailing safely under naval guidance.

The second tanker, Nanda Devi, carrying more than 46,000 metric tonnes of LPG, has also safely exited the crucial waterway.

Officials said naval assets closely guided both ships through sensitive waters to minimise risks and ensure uninterrupted cargo movement.

The development follows a high-level discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the safe flow of goods and energy supplies through the region.

Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, earlier indicated that Indian vessels could receive safe passage despite rising tensions in the Middle East.

According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, 28 Indian-flagged vessels currently operate in the Persian Gulf region.

Of these, 24 ships with 677 Indian seafarers are located west of the Strait of Hormuz, while four vessels with 101 crew members remain east of it.

Authorities said the government continues to closely monitor all Indian ships and crew in the region to ensure their safety and secure maritime trade routes.
