Afghanistan Earthquake Triggers Tremors Across Delhi-NCR, North India

Tremors from a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan were felt across Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India on Friday night, causing panic among residents who rushed out of homes and office buildings. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, the earthquake struck at 9:42:57 PM IST at a depth of 150 km, with its epicentre located in Afghanistan.

The tremors were experienced across multiple areas, including Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, along with parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and neighbouring regions.

Residents reported sudden jolts, with furniture and hanging objects swaying. Many described the shaking as brief but clearly noticeable indoors.

In several residential and commercial areas, people stepped out as a precaution, while office buildings saw temporary evacuations. Groups gathered in open spaces as they awaited further updates.

Social media platforms were flooded with posts from residents sharing their experiences, with many calling the tremors sudden and unsettling. Some reported visible movement of ceiling fans and furniture, while others felt vibrations while sitting or lying down.

Despite the widespread impact, there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage at the time of filing this report. Authorities have yet to issue a detailed advisory beyond confirming the earthquake’s parameters.

Emergency Services on Alert

Emergency services remained on alert, although no distress calls related to damage were initially received.

Officials have advised citizens to stay calm and follow standard safety protocols in case of aftershocks.

Delhi-NCR falls under Seismic Zone IV, a high-risk category, making the region susceptible to tremors even from distant quakes.

North India lies close to the Himalayan seismic belt. This is one of the most active tectonic zones globally and contributes to frequent seismic activity.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further updates are awaited.
