New Delhi, Aug 30: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Friday that the era of uninterrupted dialogue with Pakistan is over, emphasizing that “actions have consequences.”
Speaking at a book launch event in New Delhi, Jaishankar made it clear that Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, is no longer up for discussion. “As far as J&K is concerned, Article 370 is done,” he said.
When asked if India is content with the current relationship with Pakistan, Jaishankar indicated a flexible approach. “Maybe yes, maybe no. But we are not passive. Whether events take a positive or negative direction, we will react,” he stated.
During a visit to Singapore in March, Jaishankar highlighted Pakistan’s “almost industry-level” sponsorship of terrorism. He stressed that India will not avoid addressing this issue.
His comments come as Jammu and Kashmir prepare for Assembly polls. Both the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party have called for resuming dialogue with Pakistan.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have remained high since August 5, 2019, when India revoked Article 370, changing Jammu and Kashmir’s status.
In a related development, Pakistan confirmed on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Islamabad in mid-October.
Last year, Pakistan’s then-Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited India for the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting.
On Indo-US relations, Jaishankar described the partnership as valuable. “The US is indispensable for our multipolarity to advance,” he said. He noted that while India and the US may not have complete congruence, they share overlapping interests and the ability to collaborate on key issues. He added, “There are regions and issues on which we profoundly agree with the US, and there are issues on which we do not. It is on full public display.”
