Bharat Express Editor-in-Chief Upendrra Rai Remembers Ajit Rai

Expressing deep sorrow, Bharat Express Editor-in-Chief and CMD Upendrra Rai shared an emotional tribute: “On 7th June, during my visit to London, Ajit ji came to my room at Hilton Park Lane — I took pictures of that moment. He was a core part of the Bharat Express family. A regular jury member at the Cannes Film Festival, he would spend two months there before moving to Mumbai, his new base after relocating from Delhi. His passion for cinema and its intricacies was unmatched. Today, India has lost one of its finest minds in film criticism. My heartfelt tributes to him. His absence will leave a permanent void in my life — he had been with me for nearly 24 years.”

National Leaders Pay Tribute

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh also expressed shock and grief, recalling his long-standing association with Ajit Rai.

“I was stunned to hear the news of Ajit ji’s sudden demise. It’s hard to believe. We met just a few months ago, and I always admired his intellect and commitment to cinema. May his soul rest in peace,” he posted n X.

Ajit Rai’s contributions transcended language and geography. He made his mark from the Raipur Film Festival to the prestigious Cannes, leaving a strong impression across the global film landscape.

His reviews not only informed readers but also challenged them to see cinema as a force for societal reflection and transformation, not just entertainment.

For countless young journalists, writers, and aspiring filmmakers, Ajit Rai was a beacon. He selflessly mentored the next generation, offering them guidance, encouragement, and platforms to express themselves. His role as a mentor enriched the lives and careers of many.
