‘A Gifted Entertainer And A Truly Versatile Artist’: PM Modi Mourns Asrani’s Demise At 84

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani. He said Asrani’s immense contribution to Indian cinema would always be remembered.

The celebrated performer passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday, 21 October.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Asrani’s final rites were conducted at the Santacruz Crematorium on Monday.

According to his manager and close associate, the actor succumbed to a chest infection at 3 PM on 20 October.

A post on the actor’s official Instagram account confirmed the news of his passing.

“The news of the passing of the king of comedy, the great actor Asrani ji, who ruled over millions of hearts, has plunged us all into deep sorrow. He gave Indian cinema a new identity with his unique acting, simplicity, and humor. The life he breathed into every character will forever live on in our memories. His passing is not just a loss for the film industry, but for everyone who ever smiled at his acting. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti,” the post read.

Just hours before his death, Asrani had shared a Diwali greeting on social media, extending festive wishes to his fans.

Widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most enduring comic actors, Asrani enjoyed a prolific career spanning more than five decades, featuring in over 350 films.

A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he began his journey in the mid-1960s, initially taking on serious and supporting roles before becoming a household name for his comedic brilliance.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Asrani became a beloved figure in Hindi cinema, often portraying affable clerks, bumbling sidekicks, or flustered common men.

His unmatched timing and expressive face made him a director’s delight.

He delivered some of his most memorable performances in classics like Sholay and Chupke Chupke.

His portrayal of the comical jailor in Sholay, a satirical take on the dictator Hitler, remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic comic turns.

Beyond comedy, Asrani also ventured into other genres and languages, appearing in Gujarati and Rajasthani films, and even stepping behind the camera to direct several Hindi and Gujarati productions.

His collaborations with stars such as Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna, and Govinda created an enduring legacy of laughter across generations.

Occasionally, he explored serious and emotional roles in films like Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Chala Murari Hero Banne, the latter of which he also directed.

Asrani’s true legacy lies in his ability to evolve with the industry while retaining his warmth and charm.

A master of consistency and comic grace, he leaves behind an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
