Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on political parties to join hands and speed up the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort. He urged political leaders to ensure that women receive 33 per cent representation in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies at the earliest opportunity.
The Prime Minister asked parties to move beyond political disagreements and make women’s empowerment a shared national objective. He said political leaders should focus on delivering meaningful representation to women rather than competing for credit over the legislation.
PM Modi stressed that the country must give women a greater role in decision-making and enable them to participate equally in the nation-building process.
The Prime Minister described women’s participation in public life as an important component of India’s future growth. He further said bringing more women into legislative decision-making would add new ideas, perspectives and leadership to the country’s democratic system.
PM Modi said stronger representation could help advance the national ambition of building a developed India by 2047.
Parliament approved the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in 2023, paving the way for reserving one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
The legislation, however, ties the implementation of the reservation to the completion of the delimitation process.
PM Modi’s Independence Day appeal seeks to build broader political consensus on the early implementation of the constitutional provision.
The Prime Minister presented women’s representation as a national issue that should not remain confined to partisan politics. He encouraged all political parties to cooperate in turning the one-third reservation provision into reality.
PM Modi said greater participation by women in governance would strengthen democratic institutions, promote inclusive development and provide additional momentum to India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.
