53-Member CBI Team To Investigate The Sexual Assault Case In Manipur

A 53-person team was assembled by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday to look into sexual assault incidents in Manipur. Lovely Katiyar and Nirmala Devi S, two female deputy inspector generals (DIG), make up the squad.

The investigation into the sexual assault case involving three women who were stripped, displayed naked, and abused, with one of them being gang-raped by a mob in Manipur on May 4 was taken over by the central agency on July 29.

Six further incidents of violence in the northeastern state as well as the theft of weapons from state armories are currently being investigated by the CBI’s special investigative team.
The ethnic confrontations between the Meitei and Kuki groups on May 3 resulted in the deaths of more than 160 individuals. across response to the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation, a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organized across the hill areas.

The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur’s population, reside in the Imphal Valley. A little over 40% of the population are tribal people, mostly Nagas and Kukis, who live in the hill districts.

The ethnic strife has destroyed many people’s homes, leaving many of them homeless. Some of them have even sought safety in neighboring states.

PM’s I-day address

On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort’s ramparts, saying, “In the recent few weeks, a phase of violence was experienced in the northeast, especially in Manipur. Many individuals died, and the reputation of mothers and daughters was damaged. However, in recent days, indications of peace have surfaced.

PM Modi remarked, “I want to tell the people of Manipur, including women and daughters of Manipur, that the country is with you” in his speech to the Lok Sabha during the no-confidence motion.
