The police informed that they have found twenty seven mortars shells in the West Tripura district while digging a fish pond in Rangutia. It appears that shells have been used during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971.
Antony Jamatia, officer in-charge of Bamuthia outpost, said that Dulal Nama, a resident of Rangutia found 27 mortar shell buried near his home when he employed workers to dig out a fish pond on his land.
Jamatia said that it is thought that these shells were buried some 53 years ago and that the shells were fused together.

As the news reached to the authorities, they sent a large contingent of police and Tripura State Rifle(TSR) personnel to the site to oversee the unearthing of the shells at Rangutia. Rangutia is a village located along the border of India and Bangladesh.
“We couldn’t find any information about the country of origin or the name of the manufacturer of the shells on their bodies,” the officer told the media.
The senior citizens of the locality claimed that ‘Mukti Yodhas’ would come to the village for training during the time of Bangladesh liberation war.
The senior villagers are of thoughts that Mukhti Yodhas might have buried the shells during the war and forgot to dig them out when 9 month old war was over.
Tripura played a crucial role in the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistani forces, which concluded after the Mukti Bahini led by Sheikh Mujibar Rahman declared independence on March 26, 1971.
