As the JN.1 variant of COVID-19 continues to surge, the UK’s Office for National Statistics (UK ONS) has identified two new symptoms that are associated with the infection: trouble sleeping and anxiety. As per the reports, these symptoms accompany the typical COVID indicators such as runny nose, cough, headache, and weakness.
As for the COVID count in India, the country has reported over 4,000 active COVID-19 cases, with the first case linked to the JN.1 variant discovered on December 8 in Kerala. Fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and other symptoms continue to prevail as observed in earlier waves of infection.
The Union Health Ministry data released on Friday revealed 761 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths in the last 24 hours. The active case count stands at 4,334. Notably, 541 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant have been detected in India, with nearly half reported in Kerala.
The total death toll in the country has reached 5,33,385, while 4,44,78,885 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. The increasing number of cases emerged after December 5 as a consequence of the new variant in addition to cold weather conditions.
For the unversed, just when people things started getting back to normal, the JN.1 sub-variant, a descendant of Omicron subvariant BA.2.86 or Pirola, first surfaced in Kerala. India has witnessed more than 4.5 crore infections and over 5.3 lakh deaths in the approximately four-year span since the pandemic’s onset in early 2020. The country has witnessed around 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines, as per official records.
