17 policemen from Uttar Pradesh will be honored with the President’s Gallantry Medal for their role in the high-profile encounter that resulted in the deaths of mafia figure Atiq Ahmed’s son, Asad, and shooter Mohammad Ghulam.
The awards will take place in Delhi on 15 August.
The encounter occurred on 13 April 2023, in Jhansi, following the murder of Umesh Pal.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh tracked down both Asad and Ghulam, who were fugitives with a ₹5 lakh reward on each of their heads.
The operation, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Navendu Kumar and Vimal Kumar Singh, involved 6 STF officers and 11 additional police personnel.
In addition to DSP Navendu and Vimal, the recognition will extend to several other STF team members for their bravery.
This includes Inspectors Anil Kumar Singh, Gyanendra Kumar Rai, and Jitendra Kumar Singh, as well as Head Constables Sunil Kumar and Sushil Kumar.
Notably, the President’s Gallantry Medal will go to 6 of the 12 STF members involved.
DSP Navendu, a previous recipient of numerous valor awards, will receive honors alongside Inspector Jitendra Kumar Singh.
Singh is recognized for his role in the encounter with Praveen Dubey alias Bauwa, a shooter associated with Kanpur mafia Vikas Dubey.
