10 Years Of UPI: PM Modi Hails India’s Digital Payments Revolution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the achievements of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as the digital payment platform completed 10 years since its launch.

PM Modi said UPI has transformed the way Indians conduct digital transactions and described its remarkable scale and reach as a matter of pride for the country.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister recalled the introduction of UPI and said it represented a significant milestone in India’s digital payment journey. He invited citizens to share their experiences and explain the ways UPI has influenced their everyday lives.

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has become a major pillar of India’s digital payments ecosystem.

The real-time payment system now operates across 11 countries, with Greece and the Maldives among the latest nations to adopt the platform.

UPI has expanded its presence across Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Qatar, supporting smoother cross-border digital transactions.

UPI has recorded exceptional growth in both transaction numbers and monetary value since its launch.

According to an official factsheet, annual transactions increased from 2 crore in FY 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26, marking an almost 12,000-fold rise.

The annual transaction value climbed from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to nearly Rs 314 lakh crore, registering more than a 4,000-fold increase.

By July 2026, the UPI ecosystem included 741 live banks and processed 2,365.8 crore transactions worth Rs 29.87 lakh crore.

UPI handled nearly 49 per cent of global real-time payment transaction volumes in 2024, according to data highlighted by the International Monetary Fund.

After a decade of rapid expansion, UPI has become a defining feature of India’s digital economy while steadily strengthening the country’s presence in the global payments landscape.
