World Sjögren’s Day 2026: Symptoms, Causes And Treatment Explained

World Sjögren’s Day is observed every year on July 23 to raise awareness about Sjögren’s syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people worldwide.

The date marks the birth anniversary of Dr Henrik Sjögren, the Swedish ophthalmologist who first identified the condition.

Sjögren’s syndrome occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s moisture-producing glands, leading to reduced tear and saliva production.

The condition can develop on its own or alongside autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

The most common symptoms include dry eyes, dry mouth, persistent fatigue, joint pain and swelling. Some people may also experience dry skin, difficulty swallowing, swollen salivary glands, a dry cough and dental problems caused by reduced saliva.

In more severe cases, the disease can affect organs such as the lungs, kidneys and nervous system, making early diagnosis and treatment essential.

Although there is no cure for Sjögren’s syndrome, appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Doctors often recommend staying well-hydrated, using artificial tears or saliva substitutes, maintaining good oral hygiene, and scheduling regular dental and eye check-ups.

Avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol and caffeine intake, and using a humidifier indoors may also help reduce dryness.

A balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep can further support overall health.

Health experts say recognising the early signs of Sjögren’s syndrome and seeking timely medical advice can help prevent complications and improve long-term outcomes.

World Sjögren’s Day aims to increase public awareness of this often-overlooked autoimmune disease and encourage earlier diagnosis and better management.
