Thunderstorm Asthma Risk Rises As Climate Change Intensifies Pollen Allergies: Report

A recent report highlighted how climate-driven thunderstorms are intensifying pollen allergies, significantly increasing respiratory health risks worldwide.

Scientists explained that storms can rupture pollen grains into much smaller fragments, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the lungs and trigger severe allergic reactions and asthma attacks.

This phenomenon, often referred to as thunderstorm asthma, has already caused large-scale health emergencies during peak pollen seasons.

Rising global temperatures and changing weather patterns have extended pollen seasons and increased overall pollen production.

Warmer conditions stimulate plant growth and prolong flowering periods, resulting in higher concentrations of airborne allergens.

Increased carbon dioxide levels further amplify this effect by boosting plant productivity and pollen output, making allergic reactions more frequent and intense.

Researchers also noted that extreme weather events, including thunderstorms, play a crucial role in worsening allergy symptoms.

Strong winds and moisture break pollen into microscopic particles that remain suspended in the air, increasing inhalation risks even for individuals without prior allergies.

Pollution compounds the issue by altering pollen structure, making it more potent and irritating to the respiratory system.

The findings emphasise the growing public health burden linked to climate change.

Experts urged stronger monitoring systems, early warning mechanisms, and improved healthcare preparedness to manage sudden allergy outbreaks.

They also stressed the importance of addressing environmental factors such as emissions and urban pollution to mitigate long-term risks.

Without intervention, the combination of climate change and extreme weather could continue to escalate allergy prevalence and severity globally.
