Research Reveals That A Single Binge Drinking Session Can Harm The Gut

New research shows that even a single binge drinking session can decrease the gut’s ability to block bacteria and toxins from entering the bloodstream, creating a condition known as ‘leaky gut’.

Scientists discovered that the damage can occur after just four drinks for women or five for men within roughly two hours.

Gyongyi Szabo, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and corresponding author, explained that excessive drinking disrupts the gut and exposes the liver to harmful bacterial products.

“We know that excessive drinking can disrupt the gut and expose the liver to harmful bacterial products, but surprisingly little was known about how the upper intestine responds in the earliest stages,” Gyongyi Szabo said.

“Our study shows that even short bouts of binge drinking can trigger inflammation and weaken the gut barrier, highlighting a potential early step in alcohol-related gut and liver injury,” she added.

The team examined how high-dose alcohol affects different parts of the gut. Results indicated that brief episodes of heavy drinking recruit immune cells called neutrophils to the gut lining.

These cells release web-like structures called NETs, which damage the upper small intestine and weaken its barrier, causing bacterial toxins to leak into the bloodstream.

Researchers found that when they blocked NETs using a simple enzyme, fewer immune cells appeared in the gut lining, and bacterial leakage decreased. This suggests that interfering with NET formation can prevent gut injury even after a binge drinking session.

The findings highlight the immediate effects of binge drinking on gut health and underscore the importance of moderation.

They also provide new insights into how alcohol can trigger inflammation and potential liver injury long after consumption.
