Organ Transplants Surge In India As Over 4.8 Lakh Citizens Register To Donate

India has recorded a fourfold increase in organ transplants over the past decade. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, annual transplants have risen from fewer than 5,000 in 2013 to nearly 20,000 in 2025.

This growth reflects expanding infrastructure, improved awareness and stronger policy support for organ donation across the country.

At present, nearly 18 per cent of all transplants involve organs donated by deceased donors, signalling a gradual cultural shift towards cadaveric organ donation.

Since September 17, 2023, over 4.8 lakh citizens have registered for organ donation through an Aadhaar-based system, boosting transparency and public participation.

National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has reported major progress in donation and allocation nationwide. In 2025, more than 1,200 families consented to organ donation, with many donors saving multiple lives through multi-organ transplants.

India has developed strong expertise in performing complex organ transplants, including heart, lung and pancreas procedures.

The country has also emerged as a global leader in hand transplants, performing more such procedures than any other nation.

The Health Ministry credits sustained government support, clear policies and skilled medical professionals for these achievements. Indian hospitals now deliver outcomes comparable to global standards at significantly lower costs.

More families are opting for organ donation, strengthening the deceased donor programme.

The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation continues to promote multi-organ donation nationwide. Rising registrations and improved coordination are driving India towards self-reliance in advanced transplant care.
