Menstrual Cycle May Hold Key Insights Into Heart Health: Study

A woman’s menstrual cycle affects more than reproductive health, as natural hormonal changes across the month influence sleep, energy levels, mood, and heart function.

Researchers have identified that hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can change heart rate variability (HRV), an important measure of how the body responds to stress and recovery.

The study found little evidence that these hormonal shifts significantly affect muscle strength, mood, or motivation.

Heart rate variability refers to small variations in the time gap between consecutive heartbeats.

Although the heart may appear to beat steadily, the interval between beats constantly changes.

The autonomic nervous system controls this process through the sympathetic ‘fight-or-flight’ response and the parasympathetic ‘rest-and-digest’ response.

Researchers monitored healthy women across different menstrual phases, including the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase, to study changes in heart function, muscle strength, mood, and motivation.

The findings showed noticeable changes in HRV across the cycle, suggesting that fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone influence the balance between stress and relaxation systems in the body, thereby affecting heart regulation.

Muscle strength remained stable throughout the cycle, and mood and motivation showed minimal variation across different phases.

The results indicate that women using smartwatches or fitness trackers may observe regular monthly changes in HRV readings, which reflect natural hormonal patterns rather than health concerns.

Researchers concluded that considering menstrual cycle phases can improve the accuracy of heart health assessment, recovery tracking, and athletic performance analysis, providing a clearer understanding of how the female body responds to hormonal changes.
