Kidney stones are hard deposits that develop inside the kidneys when certain minerals and salts in urine become highly concentrated and form crystals.
Although they can affect people of different ages, lifestyle and dietary factors can increase the risk of developing them.
Dehydration is one of the most common risk factors. When the body does not receive enough fluids, urine becomes more concentrated, making it easier for crystals to form. Hot weather, excessive sweating and inadequate water intake can further increase this risk.
Diet plays an important role in kidney stone formation. Eating large amounts of salt, consuming excessive animal protein and having an imbalanced diet may raise the likelihood of developing stones.
Some people may have a higher risk because of family history, obesity or certain medical conditions.
The size of a kidney stone can vary, and smaller stones may pass through the urinary tract without causing major problems. Larger stones can become lodged in the urinary tract and cause intense pain.
Severe pain in the side or back is one of the most recognised warning signs. The pain may move towards the lower abdomen or groin and can come in waves.
Some people may experience pain or burning while urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, nausea or vomiting.
Changes in urine can indicate a problem. Blood in the urine may make it appear pink, red or brown.
Cloudy or foul-smelling urine, particularly when accompanied by fever or chills, may indicate an infection and requires prompt medical attention.
Doctors may recommend tests such as urine analysis and imaging to identify the stone and determine its size and location.
Treatment depends on these factors and may range from increased fluid intake and medicines to procedures for removing larger stones.
Maintaining adequate hydration, limiting excess salt and following a balanced diet can help reduce the risk.
People with recurring kidney stones may require personalised dietary advice and medical evaluation to identify the underlying cause.
