India has administered more than 80 lakh doses of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to prevent cervical cancer.
The achievement comes under the National HPV Vaccination Campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2026.
The campaign aims to expand access to HPV vaccination through India’s public healthcare system.
Under the initiative, 14-year-old girls are being offered a free and voluntary single-dose HPV vaccine, with parental consent, at government health facilities.
According to the Registrar General of India, estimates from 2021 indicate that around 1.2 crore girls form the annual cohort of 14-year-olds expected to benefit from the programme each year.
Several states have recorded significant progress. Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram have achieved 100% coverage of their identified target populations.
Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Assam have crossed 90% coverage, while Karnataka has achieved more than 85%.
Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, Kerala, Telangana and Odisha have crossed 60% coverage.
Uttar Pradesh leads in total vaccinations, with more than 22 lakh adolescent girls vaccinated under the campaign.
The government attributed the progress to coordinated efforts by state and district health teams, healthcare professionals, teachers and frontline workers, including ASHAs and ANMs.
All vaccination sessions are conducted under trained Medical Officers.
Government health facilities have 24×7 arrangements to assess and manage rare Adverse Events Following Immunisation, or AEFI.
The U-WIN digital platform is being used to monitor vaccination coverage, identify gaps and track missed beneficiaries.
The government said the campaign is now focusing on reaching remaining eligible girls and ensuring wider access to HPV vaccination.
The milestone strengthens India’s preventive healthcare efforts and long-term strategy for cervical cancer prevention among future generations.
