Researchers are developing an implantable artificial kidney that could change how people with kidney failure receive treatment.
Called Holly, the device is designed to continuously filter waste from the blood inside the body, potentially reducing the need for frequent visits to dialysis centres.
People undergoing conventional haemodialysis generally visit a dialysis centre two or three times a week.
The treatment removes waste products and excess fluid from the blood but can involve long sessions and repeated needle pricks, making it difficult for patients to maintain normal routines.
Dr Nikhil Shah and Dr Hiep Nguyen, co-founders of medical device company Nephrodite, are developing Holly.
Doctors would surgically implant the device inside the body and connect it to blood vessels in the pelvis.
Holly would continuously filter waste from the blood, more closely mimicking a healthy kidney.
The technology could potentially allow patients to work, travel and continue daily activities without arranging their lives around regular dialysis appointments.
Developers believe the device could eventually serve as a temporary option for patients waiting for a kidney transplant or as a longer-term treatment for those unable to receive one.
The development could be particularly significant for India, which faces a substantial burden of kidney disease while access to dialysis and transplantation remains limited.
Manufacturers are producing the device in Kochi, Bengaluru and Mumbai, while researchers have selected India for planned clinical trials.
Holly is still under development and cannot yet replace conventional dialysis.
The device must undergo human clinical trials and regulatory checks to establish its safety and effectiveness.
Researchers hope the technology can eventually reduce dependence on dialysis centres and make kidney replacement therapy more accessible.
