Fortis Doctor Warns Sweets Can Age You Faster; Shares Tips To Indulge Safely This Diwali

Diwali celebrations are synonymous with lights, joy, and sweets, but indulging too much can silently impact your health, warns Dr Shubham Vatsya, gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj.

In an Instagram post on October 17, Dr Vatsya explained that sweets do more than just contribute to weight gain; they can accelerate skin ageing and damage vital organs.

“Every extra bite of dessert silently sticks to your collagen, stealing your skin’s bounce and speeding up ageing,” he wrote. “It’s not just about weight anymore, it’s about youth. So before that extra piece of mithai… just ask yourself, glow chahiye, ya wrinkles?”

Dr Vatsya explains that sugar in sweets binds with collagen and elastin proteins in the body, a process called glycation.

These proteins are essential for keeping skin tight and youthful.

“Glycation doesn’t just affect your skin. It also weakens blood cells and accelerates the ageing of your organs,” he warns.

Overindulging can double the risk of diabetes, heart problems, and brain-related issues, according to the gastroenterologist. He emphasises that sweets should not become a daily habit if one wants to maintain youthfulness and overall health.

While Diwali is a time for celebration, Dr Vatsya advises moderation when enjoying mithai. He recommends limiting portions and making mindful choices to balance festive indulgence with long-term well-being.

“This Diwali, enjoy lights, laughter, and family, but prioritise your health,” he adds. The message is clear: a small portion of sweets is fine, but overindulgence comes at the cost of both youth and wellness.

By following these simple tips, festival-goers can savour the traditional treats without compromising their skin, heart, or overall health, making the celebration both joyful and safe.
