Father’s Nicotine Use May Raise Diabetes Risk In Children: Study

A recent study published in the Endocrine Society journal highlights a concerning link between a father’s nicotine use and his child’s future risk of developing metabolic disorders such as Diabetes.

Researchers say paternal lifestyle habits may directly influence the long-term health of the next generation.

According to the research, nicotine exposure in fathers can alter biological traits that regulate how the body processes sugar.

Scientists discovered that offspring of nicotine-exposed fathers showed noticeable changes in glucose metabolism, insulin levels, and liver function, factors closely connected to diabetes risk.

India faces a major tobacco challenge. Reports estimate that more than 100 million people in the country smoke, affecting millions of families.

Experts warn that smoking harms not only the individual but also impacts children and household members through long-term health risks.

Researchers conducted the study using laboratory mice to isolate the effects of nicotine.

Male mice received nicotine in their drinking water, and scientists later examined their offspring.

The results revealed metabolic differences compared with offspring of fathers without nicotine exposure.

Scientists noted that these metabolic changes influence how the body manages blood sugar.

Over time, such alterations may increase susceptibility to diabetes and other metabolic conditions.

The findings also highlight the importance of including men’s health in pre-conception care.

Traditionally, pregnancy-related health guidance focuses mainly on mothers.

Researchers stress that paternal health behaviours can also shape a child’s biological development.

Experts advise fathers to reduce or avoid tobacco and nicotine exposure before planning a family.

Healthier lifestyle choices may help lower potential risks and improve the long-term wellbeing of future generations.
