Can Young Indians Develop Diabetes Without Knowing It? Key Risks To Watch

Diabetes is a growing public health concern in India, and young adults should not overlook their risk.

Although the condition is often associated with older age, type 2 diabetes can affect younger people, particularly those with certain lifestyle habits or a family history of the disease.

Physical inactivity, excess body fat, unhealthy eating patterns and a family history of diabetes can increase the risk.

Long hours of sitting, frequent consumption of highly processed foods and inadequate exercise can further affect metabolic health.

Lifestyle is not the only factor. Genetics, age and other health conditions influence a person’s risk of developing diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can develop without obvious symptoms. Some people may experience increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight changes or persistent fatigue, while others may have no noticeable warning signs.

Early screening can help identify elevated blood glucose levels before complications arise.

Doctors may recommend blood glucose tests or an HbA1c test, which measures average blood sugar levels over approximately three months.

Young adults with risk factors should consult a healthcare professional to determine when screening is appropriate rather than waiting for symptoms to appear.

Adopting healthier habits can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Regular physical activity, balanced meals rich in vegetables and fibre, maintaining a healthy weight and getting adequate sleep can support metabolic health.

Limiting sugary drinks and breaking up long periods of sitting can help. These measures cannot eliminate every risk, but they can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes does not affect only older adults. By recognising risk factors and seeking appropriate screening, young Indians can take meaningful steps towards protecting their long-term health. Making informed lifestyle choices can help reduce their risk.
