Can Weight-Loss Injections Help Women With PCOS Manage Symptoms, Improve Fertility?

Weight-loss injections may help some women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) manage excess weight and related metabolic complications.

Experts warn that these medicines do not cure the hormonal condition and should only be used under medical supervision.

With glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists gaining popularity, specialists have stressed the importance of individualised treatment based on symptoms, weight, metabolic health and pregnancy plans.

Dr Hrishikesh Pai, Medical Director of Bloom IVF Group, said weight-loss injections were not a universal PCOS treatment. The condition can cause irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne and ovulation problems.

Dr Hrishikesh Pai said weight management addresses only one aspect of the disorder, while weight loss may improve insulin resistance and menstrual regularity without correcting hormonal imbalances.

GLP-1 medicines suppress appetite and control blood sugar. PCOS alone is not an established reason for prescribing them.

Dr Kunal Gupta, Consultant Endocrinologist at SPARSH Hospital, Bengaluru, said doctors must assess patients’ weight, blood sugar and insulin resistance before treatment. He advised combining injections with a healthy diet, exercise and regular consultations.

Experts warned that weight may return after treatment stops. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, while serious risks include gallbladder problems and pancreatitis.

Dr Nehal Dhaduk of PB Health, Gurugram, said the medicines were not a quick fix and stressed long-term weight management.

Dr Megha Mittal of Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi, said improved metabolic health and ovulation could support fertility.

GLP-1 medicines should not be used during pregnancy.

Semaglutide should be stopped at least two months before planned conception, after consulting a doctor.

PCOS treatment may include lifestyle changes, hormonal contraceptives, metformin or fertility care.

Experts stressed addressing hormonal health, fertility, mental well-being and metabolic risks alongside weight.
