Billions Of Doses Later: Study Confirms mRNA Vaccines Are Safe And Effective

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping protect millions of people from severe illness.

A new review published in The Lancet has confirmed that these vaccines remain both safe and highly effective after analysing data from billions of doses given worldwide.

The review was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and other institutions.

The researchers found that the benefits of mRNA vaccines far outweigh the risks, including for children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

mRNA vaccines teach cells to make a harmless protein, helping the immune system recognise and fight viruses effectively.

The review found that mRNA vaccines provide strong protection against severe COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

Booster doses also help improve and extend protection, especially as new virus variants emerge.

Researchers noted that most side effects are mild, including pain at the injection site, tiredness, or a slight fever.

Serious side effects like myocarditis are rare, and experts say the vaccines’ benefits far outweigh these uncommon risks.

Scientists are now exploring mRNA technology beyond COVID-19. Scientists are developing mRNA vaccines for influenza, RSV, personalised cancer vaccines, and other RNA-based treatments.

Experts also called for greater investment in vaccine manufacturing in low- and middle-income countries.

Expanding local production and strengthening healthcare systems could improve global access and ensure more people benefit from this promising medical technology in the years ahead.
