AYUSH Patent Filings In India Rise 836% As Innovation Accelerates Over Decade

India’s AYUSH sector has recorded a sharp rise in innovation and intellectual property activity, with 4,077 patent applications filed and 711 patents granted between FY15 and FY26, according to an official statement issued on Friday.

The DPIIT patent office reported that annual filings rose from 63 in FY15 to 590 in FY26. This marks an 836.5% increase over the decade.

Filings peaked at 606 in FY 2022-23 before falling to 299 in FY 2023-24. They subsequently recovered to 590 by FY26, the Ministry of AYUSH said.

Annual patent grants also increased significantly, rising from three in FY16 to 204 in FY24.

Natural persons accounted for 2,113 applications, or 51.9 per cent of the total, and secured 398 patents.

Educational institutions submitted 995 applications and received 88 grants. Together, individuals and educational institutions contributed 76.3 per cent of all filings.

Corporate and other entities accounted for 700 applications and 176 grants. Small entities submitted 144 applications, while startups contributed 125.

Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State for AYUSH and Health, said rising patent filings reflect the sector’s growing focus on research, innovation and intellectual property.

Jadhav said the government would foster an ecosystem that combines traditional knowledge, scientific research and modern innovation to develop new products, technologies and solutions. He added that the government would protect India’s rich knowledge systems.

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of AYUSH, said expanding patent activity reflected the sector’s growing research and innovation base. He highlighted the increasing participation of individuals, universities, research institutions, startups and industry.

Kotecha added that the ministry would continue supporting evidence generation, research collaboration and innovation across the Ayush ecosystem.
