AI-Powered Stethoscopes Show Promise In Early Detection Of Heart Conditions: Study

A new large-scale clinical trial has found that artificial intelligence-enabled stethoscopes could significantly enhance the early detection of heart diseases, offering fresh momentum to the use of AI in frontline healthcare settings.

Published in The Lancet, the study shows that doctors using AI-equipped stethoscopes were able to identify early signs of serious cardiac conditions, including heart failure, arrhythmias and valve disease, more quickly and frequently during routine primary care consultations.

Researchers observed that the introduction of the technology nearly doubled the detection of new heart failure cases and tripled the identification of irregular heart rhythms compared to standard care.

The AI stethoscope uses three embedded algorithms to analyse heart sounds in real time, supporting clinicians in spotting potential abnormalities earlier.

The findings emerged from the TRICORDER trial, the first national-scale, cluster randomised controlled implementation trial of a clinical AI tool. The study involved 205 NHS general practices across the UK and covered more than 1.5 million registered patients.

Over 12 months, doctors conducted close to 13,000 AI-assisted cardiac examinations. While overall heart failure detection numbers were similar between AI-supported and conventional care groups, subgroup analysis showed notably higher detection rates among patients who were actually examined using the AI device.

Despite its strong diagnostic accuracy, the study found that the technology’s real-world impact depended heavily on how well it fitted into everyday clinical workflows.

Many practices reported a gradual decline in use, citing additional steps during consultations and limited integration with electronic health records.

The researchers concluded that AI tools such as smart stethoscopes can transform early cardiac diagnosis in primary care, provided healthcare systems address implementation challenges, and clinicians remain engaged.
