Abdominal Fat Poses Higher Risk Than Overall Obesity In India; Says Dr Jitendra Singh

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh stated that abdominal obesity presents a greater health threat than general obesity, particularly in India.

He explained that individuals who appear lean may still carry dangerous visceral fat around the abdomen.

Dr Jitendra delivered these remarks at the launch of the cardiology volume Advances in Obesity and Lipid Management in CVD.

He noted that central fat accumulation is an independent risk factor and significantly increases the risk of metabolic disorders.

Dr Singh highlighted that abdominal obesity contributes to conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver, and lipid imbalances.

He stressed that Indians show a distinct body composition, which predisposes them to fat deposition around the midsection despite a relatively slim appearance.

Jitendra observed that overall obesity levels are increasing among both men and women. However, central obesity remains disproportionately prevalent and drives cardiometabolic complications.

The minister called for early diagnosis and focused interventions to tackle this concealed health risk.

He linked the growing burden of disease to sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and irregular daily routines.

He also noted a rise in metabolic disorders and early cardiac issues among younger populations.

Dr Singh cautioned against extreme fitness regimens. He stated that excessive physical exertion without adequate preparation or recovery may harm health.

He advocated a balanced approach that included proper rest, regular activity, and scientifically guided preventive care.

The publication, edited by noted cardiologist H K Chopra, features contributions from over 300 global experts.

It explores advanced therapies, digital tools, and artificial intelligence in managing obesity and lipid disorders.

Dr Singh noted that the book arrives at a crucial time as India faces rising obesity-related health challenges. He also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on promoting healthier lifestyle choices.

Abdominal or central obesity is a greater risk factor compared to overall obesity, particularly in the Indian context, where even lean and thin-looking individuals often carry significant visceral fat: Dr Jitendra Singh
