Press Information Bureau Debunks Viral Claim Of Wage Cuts Under VB-GRAMG Act

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Sunday debunked a viral video montage falsely claiming that the new Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 (VB-GRAMG) arbitrarily lowers wages previously paid under MGNREGA.

The video circulated widely, featuring Congress leaders with misleading overlays stamped ‘Fake News’.

The PIB clarified that VB-GRAMG, enacted in December 2025 to replace MGNREGA, centralises wage notifications under the central government. Section 10 of the Act ensures that wages cannot fall below the levels fixed under MGNREGA.

The central government also revises rates annually, guaranteeing a consistent upward adjustment.

Officials emphasised that VB-GRAMG preserves employment guarantees for rural workers.

Citizens enrolled under the scheme continue to receive at least 100 days of work per year.

The Act strengthens wage protections and ensures transparency in notifications, addressing past inconsistencies in decentralised wage management.

While the official stance reassures workers, critics argue the shift could dilute local autonomy.

Under MGNREGA, Panchayati Raj institutions had the flexibility to set wage rates. VB-GRAMG centralises control, prompting concerns about reduced local decision-making and potential delays in wage disbursement.

Political commentators noted that the misinformation in the viral video fueled partisan debates.
