The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a stern warning to the public after spotting several manipulated videos circulating on social media.
These clips appear to show high-profile figures, such as the Prime Minister, the Union Finance Minister, or the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, recommending investment opportunities offering ‘guaranteed profits’.
PIB’s fact-checking team confirmed that scammers digitally altered these videos and that no government institution authorised them.
According to the PIB, the suspected scam employs artificial intelligence-based voice cloning and facial feature manipulation to make prominent political and financial leaders appear to endorse bogus investment schemes.
In one such case, scammers edited footage of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to make it appear as though she was promoting a ‘wealth-generating platform’ that promised enormous daily returns.
Similarly, scammers circulated a video featuring the RBI Governor to mislead viewers into believing he was backing a specific investment scheme.
PIB and the Reserve Bank of India have both confirmed that these videos are fraudulent
The RBI publicly clarified that its officials do not participate in any of these schemes and that it does not endorse or provide financial advice through such videos.
Meanwhile, PIB has urged people not to fall prey to ‘get‑rich-quick’ propaganda and to verify all investment-related claims only through trusted, official channels.
Staying Safe: What You Should Do
This fact‑check from PIB serves as a crucial reminder: not everything you see on social media, even when it features familiar faces, is real. Proceed with caution and always verify information before believing or sharing it.
