PIB Fact Check flagged as fake a viral message claiming that Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had suspended the KYC of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) customers and would block their SIM cards within 24 hours.
The misleading notice, widely circulating on social media platform X, has raised concerns among mobile users about the authenticity of such communications and the safety of their personal information.
Addressing the issue, PIB Fact Check clarified in its post that the notice is not genuine.
“Have you also received a notice purportedly from BSNL, claiming that the customer’s KYC has been suspended by @TRAI and the sim card will be blocked within 24 hrs❓#PIBFactCheck ❌ Beware! This Notice is #Fake.✅@BSNLCorporate never sends any such notices.✅ Do not share your personal & bank details with anyone,” the post read.
The clarification states that BSNL does not issue such warnings regarding KYC suspension or SIM blocking via these channels.
Authorities have cautioned users to remain vigilant against such fraudulent messages, which often aim to extract sensitive information such as personal and banking details.
Users should not respond to suspicious messages or share confidential information with unknown sources. Such scams typically exploit fear and urgency to trick individuals into compromising their data.
The advisory reinforces the importance of verifying information through official channels before taking any action, especially when messages involve threats of service disruption.
