PIB Fact Check Warns Against Deepfake Videos Falsely Using India’s Top Leaders

PIB Fact Check has issued a strong public advisory warning citizens about the growing circulation of deepfake videos on social media that falsely portray senior Indian leaders endorsing lucrative investment schemes.

The warning highlights manipulated content featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das, all shown making claims they never issued.

The government agency stressed that scammers are increasingly using artificial intelligence to fabricate realistic videos aimed at deceiving investors.

These clips promise unusually high returns and attempt to exploit public trust in well-known national figures.

PIB Fact Check urged viewers to remain vigilant and verify all financial claims before committing money.

To raise awareness, PIB Fact Check released a 61-second explanatory video demonstrating how deepfakes are created.

The video shows how fraudsters overlay fabricated audio onto authentic footage, carefully synchronising lip movements and facial expressions to enhance realism.

Each demonstration clip carries a clear ‘FAKE’ stamp to educate viewers on the mechanics of digital manipulation.

AI-Driven Fraud Risks

Officials explained that such content relies on AI tools that can convincingly replicate the voices, gestures, and speech patterns of public figures.

The campaign aims to help citizens identify warning signs and avoid falling victim to increasingly sophisticated scams.

This advisory comes amid a sharp rise in deepfake-enabled financial fraud across India.

Authorities have linked such scams to significant monetary losses, particularly among first-time and retail investors.

Fraudsters often circulate these videos widely on messaging platforms and social networks, presenting them as exclusive or time-sensitive opportunities.

PIB Fact Check reiterated that no government authority or senior official promotes private investment schemes or guarantees returns.

Any video or message suggesting otherwise should be treated as suspicious.

The agency encouraged citizens to cross-check questionable content through verified government platforms.

It specifically advised reporting suspected deepfakes to official channels, including factcheck@pib.gov.in, to support faster verification and public alerts.

The awareness drive underlines the growing importance of digital literacy as AI tools become more accessible.

Officials emphasised that informed scrutiny remains the most effective defence against misinformation.
