PIB Fact Check Refutes Viral Instagram Reel Falsely Linking President Murmu To Aadhaar Ban Threat

The government’s official fact-verification unit has rejected a viral social media claim that falsely attributes controversial remarks to President Droupadi Murmu.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check division clarified that no such statement has been issued by the President regarding Aadhaar cards or social media conduct.

A widely circulated Instagram reel alleged that the President threatened to ban Aadhaar cards and delete the social media accounts of actresses posting in what it described as ‘inappropriate’ attire.

Officials stated that no official communication, speech, or advisory from Rashtrapati Bhavan supports this claim.

The fact-check unit labelled the content misleading and fabricated. Authorities urged citizens to verify information before sharing such material online.

Deepfake Misinformation Surge

The viral reel gained traction amid ongoing cultural debates surrounding women’s clothing and public expression in India.

Fabricated videos and manipulated clips have increasingly surfaced on platforms such as Instagram since early 2026. Many of these posts exploit polarising themes to trigger outrage and expand reach.

Government agencies have intensified efforts to counter deepfake and misinformation campaigns.

The PIB Fact Check team continues to monitor social platforms for false narratives involving constitutional authorities and public institutions.

Officials emphasised that the President’s office has not issued any directive relating to Aadhaar cancellation or digital censorship linked to personal attire.

The false claim attempted to leverage Aadhaar, India’s biometric identification system, to lend credibility to the narrative.

However, authorities reiterated that no policy discussion or administrative move supports such an action.

The government has consistently warned against the rapid spread of doctored content.

Experts note that misinformation often merges cultural sensitivities with fabricated authority statements to amplify virality.

The PIB Fact Check division advised users to rely on verified government sources for authentic updates.

It reiterated that constitutional offices maintain formal channels for official communication, and any major policy announcement would follow established procedures.
