PIB Fact Check Debunks Viral Claims Of New Taxes Under Income Tax Act, 2025

The government’s fact-checking machinery moved swiftly to counter a wave of tax-related misinformation after a viral video triggered widespread public anxiety by falsely claiming sweeping new taxes and penalties under the Income Tax Act, 2025.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit categorically rejected the claims, calling them misleading, baseless and entirely divorced from the provisions of the law.

The viral content alleged that, from April 1, 2026, citizens would face new penalties for holding cash beyond certain limits and for owning multiple residential properties.

PIB Fact Check clarified that no such provisions exist in the Income Tax Act, 2025.

The unit emphasised that the legislation introduces no new cash-related reporting requirements, no penalties on household cash holdings and no restrictions on owning homes beyond existing norms.

What the Income Tax Act, 2025 Actually Does?

The Income Tax Act, 2025, which received presidential assent in August 2025, replaces the decades-old Income Tax Act of 1961.

According to PIB Fact Check, the new law focuses on simplifying language, reorganising sections and modernising structure to improve compliance and ease interpretation. It does not introduce any major policy changes or fresh tax burdens on individuals.

PIB Fact Check urged taxpayers to rely only on official government sources and referred citizens to the detailed FAQs released by the Income Tax Department for accurate information.

The clarification aimed to neutralise panic sparked by selectively edited clips and unverified claims that spread rapidly across social media platforms.

Despite the swift response, public reactions online revealed growing frustration with the speed and scale at which misinformation circulates.

Several users acknowledged PIB Fact Check’s clarification but questioned its reach, noting that fact-check posts often attract far fewer views than the original misleading videos.

Many argued that corrective messaging, while essential, struggles to match the virality of sensational falsehoods.

Critics called for stronger action against the originators of such misleading content. They demanded enforcement mechanisms that penalise deliberate misinformation, especially on issues as sensitive as taxation, where fear can distort financial decisions and erode trust in governance.

According to these voices, fact-checks must be paired with accountability to create real deterrence.

The episode once again highlighted the political and administrative challenge of combating digital misinformation in an era of instant virality.
