The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has clarified that claims suggesting the government has newly imposed a 5 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on e-commerce delivery services are false.
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check initiative issued the clarification to address misleading claims about the tax rate applicable to these services.
According to the CBIC, the 57th GST Council recommended reducing the GST rate from 18 per cent to 5 per cent.
The revised rate represents a reduction in the existing tax rate rather than the introduction of a new levy.

The PIB Fact Check post stated that ‘5% GST newly imposed on e-commerce delivery services’, was a false claim. It clarified that the rate had been rationalised from 18 per cent to 5 per cent following the recommendation of the 57th GST Council.
The clarification aims to correct misinformation circulating online and prevent confusion among consumers, e-commerce businesses and delivery-service providers regarding the applicable tax rate.
The distinction is important because a reduction in an existing tax rate is different from the introduction of a new tax.
The CBIC’s statement specifically addresses claims that could give the impression that consumers and businesses have newly become liable for a 5 per cent GST on these services.
The authorities have urged the public to verify taxation-related information through official government communications and avoid sharing unverified claims on social media.
The clarification highlights the importance of checking the original source before circulating claims about changes in tax policy.
