PIB Busts Fake Claim On Free Electric Bicycles

PIB Fact Check has exposed a misleading social media claim that falsely suggests the Indian central government is distributing free electric bicycles to all school students.

The clarification follows the rapid circulation of a viral Instagram reel that attempted to present the claim as an official welfare initiative.

According to PIB Fact Check, no such nationwide scheme exists. The agency categorically stated that the central government has not announced any program offering free electric bicycles to students.

Officials confirmed that the viral content deliberately misrepresents government policies to mislead the public and attract attention.

Through official verification, PIB highlighted that while certain state governments have introduced bicycle distribution schemes, these initiatives differ significantly from the viral claim.

States such as Jharkhand and Karnataka provide free bicycles to students to encourage school attendance and reduce dropout rates.

However, these bicycles are standard, non-electric models and operate strictly at the state level.

PIB Fact Check stressed that no electric bicycle program runs at the national scale. It urged citizens not to confuse state-level education incentives with central government policies.

The agency warned that scammers often exploit public interest in welfare schemes to spread false information and lure users into fraudulent activities.

The government-backed fact-checking body also released a visual graphic clearly marking the claim as “fake” with a bold red stamp.

The message encouraged users to rely only on verified sources for policy-related information. PIB specifically directed citizens to cross-check claims through its official website, pib.gov.in.

An official video shared alongside the clarification reinforced the importance of digital vigilance.

The video demonstrated how misinformation spreads rapidly on social media platforms and why timely verification remains essential.

PIB Fact Check reiterated that citizens should pause, verify, and share responsibly.

It emphasised that authentic government schemes always appear on official portals and verified communication channels.

By promoting awareness, the agency aims to curb the misuse of welfare narratives and protect citizens from online deception.
