PIB Bursts Viral Tax Myth; Exposes Truth Behind ₹10 Lakh Transactions

A viral Instagram reel recently sparked widespread anxiety by falsely claiming that the government has imposed an 85 per cent tax on bank transactions exceeding ₹10 lakh.

The alarming assertion spread rapidly across social media, triggering confusion and fear among depositors. However, PIB Fact Check has categorically debunked the claim, calling it misleading and completely untrue.

In a clear clarification, PIB Fact Check stated that India does not levy any tax on bank transactions themselves.

Under the Income Tax Act, taxation applies strictly to income earned, not to the act of depositing or withdrawing money from a bank account.

The viral reel, according to officials, distorted existing compliance rules and presented them as a punitive tax policy.

The clarification assumes importance because many users misunderstood mandatory reporting norms as taxation.

Banks are legally required to report high-value cash transactions exceeding ₹10 lakh in a financial year to the Income Tax Department.

This reporting mechanism exists solely to track potential tax evasion and curb black money, not to automatically deduct tax from customers’ accounts.

Officials emphasised that no tax is deducted merely because a transaction crosses ₹10 lakh. Scrutiny begins only if the Income Tax Department finds the funds unexplained or inconsistent with declared income.

In such cases, the law allows authorities to impose stringent penalties. These can go up to 60 per cent tax, along with surcharge and cess, effectively touching around 84 per cent, but only after due assessment and proof of undisclosed income.

Fact Check Ends Panic

The viral misinformation appears to stem from misinterpretations of compliance measures announced in the Union Budget 2025.

Those provisions strengthened surveillance of large cash movements to discourage illicit financial flows.

They did not introduce any fresh tax on legitimate banking transactions, digital transfers, or savings deposits.

PIB Fact Check underlined that cash reporting rules have existed for years and form part of India’s global commitments to financial transparency.

Authorities reiterated that honest taxpayers and salaried individuals have nothing to fear as long as their income sources remain legitimate and documented.

The episode highlights how half-truths and exaggerated claims on social media can trigger unnecessary panic, especially around financial matters.

Officials urged citizens to rely on verified government channels before believing or forwarding sensational claims.

By issuing a prompt clarification, PIB Fact Check once again demonstrated its role in shielding the public from fabricated policies and digital misinformation.

The government reaffirmed that while it continues to tighten oversight to fight black money, it remains committed to protecting lawful banking activity and public confidence.
