MEA Fact Check flags Misleading Posts Claiming World Leaders Fell Ill After BRICS Summit

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Fact Check on Thursday cautioned against misleading and malicious social media posts claiming that several world leaders fell ill after attending the BRICS Summit in India.

The fact-checking handle posted on X, “Misleading! We caution against such malicious posts on social media platforms.”

MEA Fact Check shared a post by ‘First Squawk’ claiming the BBC reported illnesses among several leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. It further alleged that reports concerning Chinese President Xi Jinping remained unconfirmed.

Another post by ‘unusual_whales’ repeated similar claims about Ramaphosa and Xi, attributing them to the BBC.

The fact-checking handle then flagged a post by ‘Raw Egg Nationalist’. The account shared a video alleging that BRICS Summit catering had caused the deaths of Xi Jinping and Ramaphosa.

MEA Fact Check further highlighted a post by ‘Dakkadakka’, which alleged that Ramaphosa and Xi had suffered food poisoning during a BRICS event in India.

The ‘BRICS News’ account on X claimed that Ramaphosa had become ill after attending the summit. MEA Fact Check labelled the claim misleading.

A post by ‘Emmanuel Kimutai Motelin’ similarly alleged that multiple world leaders had fallen ill after the summit.

The handle flagged that claim as misleading as well. It lastly shared a post by ‘Maverick’, which used a mocking acronym while claiming that two leaders had returned from India in ill health.
