Is Bhakra Nangal Dam At Risk Of Collapse? PIB Fact Check Debunks Viral Claim

A video circulating across social media platforms has raised concerns by claiming that the wall of the Bhakra Nangal Dam has developed a tilt of 1.77 inches.

The video suggests that a possible failure of the dam could cause extensive flooding and submerge several cities, including Delhi.

PIB Fact Check has rejected the claim as misleading, urging people not to believe sensational messages without verifying them through reliable sources.

According to PIB Fact Check, the dam wall recorded a deflection of 0.86 inches on August 27, 2024, rather than the 1.77 inches claimed in the viral video.

The fact-checking agency clarified that the measured deflection does not indicate an unsafe condition at the dam.

Authorities continue to monitor various technical parameters to assess the structural condition and safety of the facility.

PIB Fact Check stated that the levels of stress, strain, pore pressure and seepage associated with the dam remain within the prescribed permissible limits. These measurements indicate that the structure continues to operate within established safety parameters, and the dam remains completely safe, according to the clarification.

The agency advised people against sharing unverified information that could create unnecessary fear or panic. It specifically warned social media users not to fall for sensational claims concerning the safety of major infrastructure.

PIB Fact Check encouraged citizens to verify such information through official sources before forwarding or sharing it online.

The clarification comes amid the rapid circulation of videos and messages on social media, highlighting the importance of checking factual information before believing claims about potential disasters or public safety.
