At Tuesday’s (Monday night in the US) International Emmy Awards 2023, Vir Das and Derry Girls season 3 took home the International Emmy for Comedy. Vir received her second nomination for an International Emmy. The actor and comedian became the first Indian comic to win an award when he accepted the prize for his Netflix comedy special, Vir Das: Landing. At the 51st International Emmys, producer Ekta Kapoor received the International Emmy Directorate Award.
The official International Emmy Awards Twitter account announced, “We have a tie! “Vir Das: Landing, produced by Weirdass Comedy/ Rotten Science/Netflix, wins the International Emmy for Comedy.” Season two of Le Flambeau, a French television program, and Argentina’s El Encargado were among the other finalists.
Saying, “This moment is truly surreal – an incredible honor that feels like a dream,” Vir expressed his delight and joy. It’s a significant accomplishment for Indian humor in general as well as for me to win an Emmy for Vir Das: Landing in the humor Category. The global reception of Vir Das: Landing is encouraging, and much of this can be attributed to the efforts of Netflix, Akash Sharma, and Reg Tigerman.
It has been a difficult and fulfilling path for me to write local stories to win an international award, and Netflix has been a major contributor to that development. The ongoing investigation of varied storylines excites me; India can take you from Noida to the International Emmys.
He also took to X, writing, “For India. For Indian Comedy. Every breath, every word. Thank you to the @iemmys for this incredible honour.”
