Actress Vaani Kapoor has opened up about her upcoming Netflix series ‘Mandala Murders’, emphasising how it breaks away from the conventional mould of Indian crime thrillers.
Kapoor, who portrays lead detective Rea Thomas, said the series offers a layered and atmospheric experience, delving deep into themes like cult culture, emotional trauma, and blind faith.
“What really sets Mandala Murders apart is the world it’s set in. It’s not just another whodunnit,” she said. “The show blends crime with psychological depth. Every character carries something— a secret, a wound, a belief— and that complexity makes the story feel more real and gripping. It’s unsettling in the best way.”
Vaibhav Raj Gupta, who plays the role of cop Vikram, echoed Kapoor’s sentiments. He credited the writing and world-building for the show’s uniqueness.
“The characters are not simple. I’ve never seen any show like this on Indian OTT. The take is fresh, especially with the mythology. Mandala has created its mythology, which is very interesting,” Gupta said. “And of course, it’s YRF’s first crime drama thriller, so that’s something to look forward to.”
Actress Surveen Chawla, who plays a politically powerful character named Ananya, added, “It’s a genre-bending narrative— not something commonly attempted. Even the idea of it was exciting to me.”
Directed by Gopi Puthran and Manan Rawat, Mandala Murders premieres on Netflix on July 25.
Two detectives investigate a series of ritualistic killings in the fictional town of Charandaspur in the series. Their search uncovers ties to a secretive, ancient society that has operated in the shadows for centuries.
