The much-anticipated film Udaipur Files, starring Vijay Raaz, has finally reached cinemas across India, releasing in 4,500 theatres after securing approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The release follows months of legal delays and controversy surrounding its sensitive subject matter.
Investigators described the June 28, 2022, killing of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, as a terrorist conspiracy, which inspired the film.
The killing allegedly followed his sharing of a social media post in support of then BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Her comments had sparked the Muhammad remarks controversy that year.
Speaking on the film’s release day, Kanhaiya Lal’s son, Yash Sahu, described the project as a truthful cinematic portrayal of his father’s story.
“This is also called NIA’s chart sheet. So, all that has been shown in this movie. And there is a message in this movie that such incidents happen in the country, they can be brought in front of the country through a movie, through a cinematic graphic,” he said. “It carries a message that such incidents must be brought to light through cinema.”
Sahu voiced frustration at the slow pace of justice, noting that three years had passed without the perpetrators receiving punishment.
“I hope that after watching this movie, people will support us in our fight for justice. And the criminals will stand with us to get the punishment of hanging as soon as possible,” he added.
The film’s journey to the big screen was far from smooth. Initially set for release on 11 July 2025, a Delhi High Court halted the Udaipur Files stay order on July 10, just one day before its premiere.
Subsequent attempts to release the film met further legal challenges, with the matter eventually reaching the Supreme Court.
The court noted that the film had received CBFC certification and allowed its screening. It then left the final decision to the Central Government.
The government later gave the go-ahead, paving the way for its nationwide release.
Kanhaiya Lal’s wife, Jasoda Sahu, personally appealed to the Prime Minister when the release stalled.
“This film is a true reflection of our family’s pain and struggle, and the entire country should see it,” she said.
Kanhaiya Lal’s killers released a video claiming they acted in retaliation for his social media post.
The Supreme Court dismissed the accused Javed’s petition challenging the film’s release.
For the Sahu family, Udaipur Files is more than entertainment; it is a call for justice and public awareness.
With its nationwide release now underway, the film ensures Kanhaiya Lal’s story remains remembered and heard.
