Colombian singer Shakira, one of the world’s best-selling musicians, has been immortalized in her famed belly-dancing posture in a massive bronze statue in her hometown of Barranquilla.
In the presence of the singer’s parents, the city’s Mayor Jaime Pumarejo inaugurated the 6.5 metre (21 foot) sculpture in a park along the banks of the Magdalena River on Tuesday.
“The Yino Marquez statue shows millions of girls that they can, that they can pursue their dreams and any of them can achieve what they want”, said Pumarejo, who used to see Shakira perform at local children’s concerts.
The sculpture depicts the long, curly-haired singer belly dancing with her arms high, wearing a sheer skirt with shining aluminum embellishment.
A plaque honors the singer, who won three Latin Grammy Awards in 2023 and mentions her organization ‘Pies descalzos’, which translates to ‘bare feet’, for early childhood development.
“A heart that composes, hips that do not lie, an unmatched talent, a voice that moves masses and feet that march for the good of children and humanity”, the statement continues.
Shakira, who resides in Miami, said in a statement released by the mayor’s office that the statue honored her and that Barranquilla will always be her home.
