Actor Rakul Preet Singh has opened up about her decision to portray Surpanakha in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, saying the character’s complexity and the chance to challenge long-held perceptions convinced her to accept the role.
Responding to an open letter from an admirer on X, Rakul thanked the fan for the thoughtful message and explained what drew her to the character.
“Thank you for this beautiful letter.❤️What made me say yes to Surpanakha was exactly what you mentioned – her complexity. History often remembers her for one moment, but there is so much more to her story. As an actor, roles that challenge perception are the most exciting. I hope audiences discover her with an open mind when Ramayana arrives.🙏,” she wrote.

The open letter, shared by Dhrubajyoti Chatterjee, described Surpanakha as one of the most misunderstood and influential figures in the Ramayana. It argued that although many remember her for a single episode, her actions shaped the course of the epic and deserved a more nuanced portrayal.
Rakul’s response has drawn praise from fans, many of whom appreciated her perspective on portraying a character often viewed through a one-dimensional lens.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana: Part One stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha.
The film is produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, and is scheduled for a Diwali 2026 theatrical release.
