Rajesh Khanna: The Stardom That Time Could Not Fade

On the occasion of his birth anniversary, the Indian film industry and millions of admirers across generations remember Rajesh Khanna, the legendary actor who redefined stardom in Hindi cinema.

Fondly called Kaka, he remains an enduring symbol of romance, emotion and mass appeal, even years after his passing.

Born as Jatin Khanna on December 29, 1942, Rajesh Khanna was adopted at a young age and raised in Girgaon, Mumbai. His early exposure to theatre and performing arts shaped his passion for acting.

Fate intervened in 1965 when he won the All-India United Producers and Filmfare Talent Hunt. The landmark victory opened the doors of the Hindi film industry to the young aspirant.

He made his film debut with Aakhri Khat (1966), which received international recognition, but true stardom came soon after.

Between 1969 and 1971, Rajesh Khanna delivered an unprecedented streak of 15 consecutive solo hit films. The record remains unmatched.

Movies such as Aradhana, Anand, Kati Patang, Amar Prem, Safar and Bawarchi established him as a box-office phenomenon. They also cemented his place in cinematic history.

His expressive eyes, understated dialogue delivery and emotional depth resonated deeply with audiences, particularly in romantic and socially driven narratives.

Songs picturised on him became chartbusters, further amplifying his popularity.

Among his most celebrated performances, Anand (1971) stands out as a defining role, where his portrayal of a terminally ill man remains one of the most poignant performances in Indian cinema. His ability to blend vulnerability with charm made his characters unforgettable.

Even as cinematic trends evolved, Rajesh Khanna’s influence on storytelling, stardom and fan culture remained profound.

Rajesh Khanna passed away in 2012, but his films continue to captivate audiences.

On his birthday, tributes pour in, reaffirming his status as a timeless icon whose contribution shaped the golden era of Hindi cinema.
