The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has issued a caution to Kapil Sharma’s popular comedy programme, The Great Indian Kapil Show, following instances where celebrity guests referred to Mumbai as ‘Bombay’.
MNS leader Ameya Khopkar, who heads the party’s film wing, shared the warning on his social media account.
Khopkar pointed out that even though the Maharashtra government officially renamed the city Mumbai in 1995, Kapil Sharma’s show, Hindi films, and Delhi-based Rajya Sabha MPs and show anchors continue to use the term ‘Bombay’.
He issued a ‘request-cum-warning’ urging the show to respect the official nomenclature.
“It has been over 30 years since Bombay was renamed Mumbai, yet the old name is still frequently used. We urge the programme and its guests to acknowledge the official change,” Khopkar stated.
The warning followed a specific episode in which actress Huma Qureshi mentioned her experiences in ‘Bombay’ while speaking about her brother, Saqib Saleem, and their challenges as outsiders.
Khopkar shared the clip to urge the show and its guests to use the city’s official name.
The Great Indian Kapil Show blends celebrity interviews with comedy sketches. Apart from Kapil Sharma, the show features Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Sunil Grover, Archana Puran Singh, and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
The show has hosted a variety of high-profile personalities, including Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and his family, cricket stars Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, and international pop singer Ed Sheeran, among others from the entertainment and sports industries.
The party has called on the show and its guests to consistently use ‘Mumbai’ to honour both the state and central government’s official recognition of the name.
Khopkar’s warning signals the party’s continued focus on safeguarding Maharashtra’s cultural and linguistic identity in mainstream media.
